W S Hitchcock is a consulting firm located in Houston, Texas that specializes in environmental chemistry. W S Hitchcock was founded by Dr. Hitchcock to provide chemistry, environmental chemistry, and related services to the chemical and petrochemical industries and to the legal community. Dr. Hitchcock is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Quality.

Environmental chemistry encompasses a number of area related to chemistry and is complimentary to other disciplines such as environmental geology, hydrogeology, toxicology, risk assessment, microbiology and bioremediation, health and safety, and environmental engineering. Environmental chemistry is essentially the science of identifying and measuring the amount of chemicals and radiochemical species in the environment. It also includes the study of the fate and effects of these chemical species in the environment.

It includes such tasks as:

defining the intended use of analytical data,

preparing sampling plans to provide data that satisfy the intended use,

selecting appropriate analytical methods,

advising on the collection of samples in the field,

interpreting laboratory analytical results,

assuring the validity and legal defensibility of analytical results, and

assessing the quality and usefulness of existing data.

In determining the fate and effect of chemical species, evaluation of organic and inorganic chemical reactions as well as physical processes such as solubility, volatilization, and sorption are often involved.
